Grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. A higher number means a thicker, warmer and harder-wearing garment that holds its shape and sits a logo better. Lower numbers are lighter and cooler.
The cotton fibres are twisted tighter and finer before knitting. The result is softer, stronger and smoother than standard cotton, which gives a cleaner surface for print and embroidery.
Short and loose fibres are combed out, leaving only the long ones. It feels softer, pills less and lasts longer. Combed ringspun is the premium end of cotton garments.
65/35 polyester-cotton is the workwear standard: tough, quick drying and it keeps its colour. 50/50 shrinks less than pure cotton and holds its shape. 80/20 cotton-rich keeps the soft feel with less shrinkage, common in hoodies.
Piqué is the textured, breathable knit used on classic polos. Jersey is the smooth knit used on t-shirts and gives the best surface for large prints.
Pulls sweat away from the skin, dries fast and stays colourfast through the wash. Ideal for sportswear and hi-vis, and it takes DTF prints very well. Recycled polyester performs the same.
Anti-pill fleece is treated so it stays smooth instead of bobbling. Microfleece (around 170 gsm) is light for layering, while 280 to 350 gsm fleece is heavy and warm for outdoor work.
Layers bonded together into one fabric: an outer face, often a membrane, and a soft inner. 2 and 3-layer softshells resist wind and showers. Printable softshells have a smoother face for back prints.
Hi-vis is certified to EN ISO 20471 in Class 1, 2 or 3. The higher the class, the more fluorescent and reflective material, and the more visible the wearer. Most sites ask for Class 2 or above.
